This 12 Gauge shotshell is loaded out with 12 pellets of #1 buckshot. Each pellet is 0.30” in diameter, weighs 40 grains (the same as a conventional 22 LR bullet), and possesses the concentricity and hardness requisite for straight flight that terminates in hard impact.
#1 buck isn’t as well known as 00 buck. Its pellets are a little smaller and a little lighter. More of them fit to a shell to deliver a denser spread, and their slightly reduced momentum means #1 buck pellets are less inclined to penetrate multiple sheets of wallboard. That makes this shell a safer bet for home defense as well as suitable for hunting in areas with a lot of thick vegetation.
Rio loads their shotshells with their own proprietary propellant blend, which burns fast yet clean to preserve good functionality in a shotgun. These shells’ hinged wads collapse throughout ignition to reduce felt recoil somewhat and have strong hulls to contain all that pressure without splitting and getting stuck in the chamber.
